 I use photoshop CS3 right now. Was using Photoshop CS4 tutorial. I've heard that GIMP (is it gimp? :S) is very useful and free but I don't know how to use it.

 paint.net is way better than gimp (yes its gimp). very nice pics tho man. if your wanting to try paint.net you can find render effects very easily for it, theres no shortage. my paint.net has way more effects than my cs4 now.

 paint.net isnt as good as GIMP. It is however easier to use. Almost any version of photoshop beats GIMP and Paint.net hands down.

 ya totally agree but effects are way easier to find for pain.net than the other programs it seems. maybe im lookin in the wrong places- do you recomend a good site to find photoshop effects for free?

 When you say "effects" are you talking about filters (Like Gaussian Blur, Wave, Wind, etc)?

If you aren't then please specify, 'cause I'm not too sure of what you're talking about.
If you ARE referring to filters then I really don't know. I didn't even know you COULD find new effects. I just use the ones I have in different ways along with brushes, textures and patterns.

 yes- the filters. thats what im sayin. i cant find any extra filters for photshop.
in paint.net they are simply called effects, and you can download tons.

thats one reason i cant totally switch over to photoshop. i have to keep using paint.net for the variety of effects-"filters".

 For photoshop their called, Plugins, Custom Filters and Custom Brushes. Not only is it really easy to use photoshop to make your own. But you can also download LOTS of these from various sites.

ill get some links for you shortly.
